HARRIS: SABAH BE BETTER UNDER NAJIB
KOTA KINABALU, Nov 15 (Bernama) -- Former Chief Minister Datuk Harris Salleh opines that Sabah will enjoy a bright future under the government of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said unlike his predeccesors, Najib was more open to transformation in all aspects for the good of the people, the state and the country.

"I can see Najib is a good man, kindhearted and honest. Of course other leaders are honest but Najib is more concerned about the well-being of the people and the country as can be seen (through his transformation programmes," he told a media conference, here today.

Withiout elaborating further, Harris said the people had placed high hopes on the Prime Minister to deliver the goods, especially in addressing some of the pressing issues facing the state.

"Najib should be able to do something about it...but it takes time because he inherited a lot of long-standing problems," he said.

Citing the issue of Borneonisation, which give priority to Sabahans to head Federal departments and agencies in the state, Harris said: "If the Prime Minister knows about this, surely he will do something to correct it".

"This is not a question of honouring the agreements (during the formation of Malaysia (in 1963) but the Federal govermnent must recognise the ability of Sabah people in the Federal civil service in the state.

"It has been more than 40 years now (since Sabah gained independence) and I believe many Sabahans by now are qualified to take up the posts of head of departments or agencies," he said.

In this respect, he urged the Federal government to increase by more than 50 per cent the number of Sabahans heading Federal departments and agencies in the state, next year.

On the request by state leaders including from opposition parties to the Federal government to revise the oil royalty from five percent to no less than 20 per cent, Harris, who supported it, expressed confidence that the issue could be discussed further with a view to finding a solution in an amicable way. -- BERNAMA
